Cooperative Games

Conflict Resolution Day is the perfect time for children and young people to learn skills to resolve conflicts creatively. Playtime does not always need to be competitive or mean-spirited; children and young people can learn to play cooperative games. These games listed and described here are great for Conflict Resolution Day, but also for parties; to incorporate in after school programs; during school recess or for gym.

Bumper Tag
Bumper Tag is played in an open space such as a gym, playground, or yard. Players begin by linking arms in pairs, then the pairs spread out evenly around the play area. Two unlinked players begin a game of tag, one chasing the other in and out around the linked pairs. The chased player avoids being tagged by linking arms with a person in one of the pairs. The player attached to the opposite side of the newly formed threesome becomes the pursued runner.

Prui
Prui is another cooperative game – one that encourages laughter. One person is chosen to be “Prui.” The game begins with all players (except Prui) closing their eyes and wandering around. When a player finds himself or herself near another person, he or she shakes that person’s hand and says, “Prui”? Everyone but the real Prui says “Prui” back. When a player finds the real Prui, the two stand near each other and hold hands until others join them. As the players find Prui and join the line, they can open their eyes. The game ends with everyone holding hands quietly because everyone has found Prui.

Vegetable Cart Upset
Vegetable Cart Upset is a cooperative variation of musical chairs with no time limit and no one is “out” of the game. This game requires chairs to be placed in a circle – one for each person except for the player who begins the game. Each person takes the name of a vegetable: carrots, peas, asparagus, corn, and so on around the circle. Vegetable Cart is easier to play if more than one person shares the same vegetable name. The game begins when the standing player calls out the name of one vegetable. Everyone who is that vegetable gets up and finds a new seat. The standing player also has to find a new seat. The person who is left standing calls out the next vegetable. When somebody calls out “Vegetable Cart Upset”, everyone must find a new seat. Variations to this game can be fruit basket upset, ice –cream cone, or ethnic food basket upset.

Volleyball, soccer and basketball
Yes, some traditional competitive games can be changed into win/win games where everyone feels like the winner. In volleyball, team members can rotate all around the court, not just on their own side. With both “teams” rotating, no one team is a loser. The same technique can be applied to soccer and basketball where the teammates can rotate between both sides in one game.
